Museum of the American Revolution Earns the Certified Autism Center™ Designation

The Museum of the American Revolution has earned the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation, granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). The certification demonstrates the museum’s commitment to providing a supportive environment to all guests, including those with autism and other sensory disorders.

The Museum of the American Revolution went through a robust training and certification process that included staff training in autism sensitivity and awareness as well as an onsite review from IBCCES to further enhance the guest experience. The training will equip their team with the necessary tools and awareness to better communicate and engage with guests with sensory needs and their family members. The onsite review also included sensory and tactile guides that are an invaluable tool for families with special needs when planning their visit.

“We are incredibly proud to be named a Certified Autism Center by IBCCES, a designation that demonstrates our commitment to fostering inclusive, welcoming experiences for all people,” said Dr. R. Scott Stephenson, President and CEO of the Museum. “This certification is part of our ongoing effort to ensure that accessibility and inclusion are embedded in everything we do. We look forward to engaging new audiences and enabling even more people to experience the rich and complex story of our founding.”

The Museum of the American Revolution explores the dramatic, surprising story of the American Revolution through original objects, immersive galleries, powerful theater experiences, and digital touchscreens. In order to make the Museum experience as comfortable as possible for all guests, the Museum also offers noise-reducing headphones and a quiet room giving guests the opportunity to enjoy the Museum’s signature films in a private setting. For guests with visual and/or hearing impairments, the Museum offers closed captioning for all films, tactile maps of the exhibits, Touch Tours by request, transcripts of audio tours of the core galleries and special exhibitions, and American Sign Language interpreters by request, among other amenities. For almost 20 years, IBCCES has been the industry leader in autism and cognitive disorder training and certification for healthcare professionals and educators around the globe. IBCCES recognized that many families and individuals who have special needs have limited travel options. In response to this need, IBCCES created training and certification programs specifically for the hospitality and travel industry. While research shows that travel is one of the most intellectually stimulating events for individuals on the autism spectrum, there are still few trained and certified travel options for parents looking for destinations able to accommodate their needs. More parents are seeking out destinations that have completed research-based training and professional review as they search for options.

“We are proud to partner with the Museum of the American Revolution, it is because of organizations like this, that strive to go above and beyond in including all guests, that we are seeing a large increase in the availability of certified travel options for those with autism and sensory disorders,” said Myron Pincomb, Board Chairman at IBCCES.
