CAS, LPC, Clinical Director & Therapist

I believe the education provided in the training program, such as autism support in the school and advocacy efforts both in and outside of the school setting, were fundamental pieces to add to my skill set as a therapist. The series of instructors who taught the training were enthusiastic teachers who helped explain concepts in a way that was both entertaining and informative. I especially appreciated how the program kept changing its medium of teaching, from short quizzes to video lectures to opportunities for review.

What’s your favorite part about what you do?

I believe in Temple Grandin’s declaration, “I am different, not less.” As a Certified Autism Specialist, I enjoy working with those who are neurodivergent thinkers, have an Autism or ADHD diagnosis, or who share traits with ASD/ADHD. I enjoy helping clients to identify their own goals and create progress towards their goals. It’s also important to me that I educate counselors in my field on the empowerment we can assist our clients in finding, rather than choosing for our clients what is best for them.

How has your IBCCES training/credential helped you in your career?

As a marketing tool, it’s been instrumental in helping me gain new clientele. As a training tool, it was something that helped maintain my education as a counselor who works with neurodivergent thinkers.

How do you use/implement what you learned in the IBCCES certification training?

The IBCCES certification training helped open my mind to the world of school education and where my clients may need assistance with gaining school support. The training helped me realize that I needed further education, and I began networking with Certified School Counselors to learn more about how the school treats the clients I see in the zip codes I serve. Since I participated in the IBCCES certification training, my practice has hired two Certified School Counselors, both of whom were also special education teachers/special education coordinators, and this, in turn, helped create ongoing, in-house education and training for our staff.
