Emily F.

Certified Autism Specialist™ (CAS), Special Education Teacher at Polk County School Board

What’s your favorite part about what you do?

“I am truly passionate about my work and enjoy supporting autistic individuals. I take pride in using evidence-based practices and intervention strategies to help my students develop essential life skills. With the growing prevalence of autism, Certified Autism Specialists™ are vital service providers and advocates.”

How has your IBCCES training/credential helped you in your career?

“My IBCCES certification has opened doors to opportunities I may not have otherwise received. I am currently exploring the launch of my own Autism Center at the Surfers for Autism Sensory Ranch. My goal is to reach and support as many families affected by autism as possible using my expertise as a Certified Autism Specialist™ (CAS).”

How do you use/implement what you learned in the IBCCES certification training?

“Recently, I partnered with a volunteer organization that shares my passion for autism acceptance. Together, we are developing the Surfers for Autism Sensory Ranch Initiative to provide autistic individuals and their families access to education, therapies, social and life skills classes, equine-assisted learning, and swim instruction—at little to no cost.”

More on how the IBCCES training has impacted Emily:

“The first time I walked into my classroom, I fell in love with my students and became deeply interested in autism studies. When my son was diagnosed with Level One autism, I struggled to find the right support. I earned my Master’s degree in ASD to better understand his behaviors and provide the help he needed. I used the tools and resources from that journey—and later, from my IBCCES certification—to grow as an educator and better serve my students.”

“After earning my certification, I became involved with Surfers for Autism, an organization that provides free surfing lessons and events throughout Florida for autistic individuals and those with other developmental disabilities. I now serve as the Director of Operations for the Surfers for Autism Sensory Ranch in Palm City, FL. We’re working to create an inclusive environment where participants can benefit from equine-assisted learning, community gardening, sensory exploration zones, and social skills and caregiver support groups. As an autism specialist, I see infinite possibilities in play-based learning, the therapeutic benefits it offers, and the value of professional collaboration in achieving holistic treatment success.”
