6 Areas of Autism Competency
The IBCCES Board of Directors has approved 6 areas of autism competency for the CAS program.

Autism Overview
- Types of ASD, Signs and Symptoms, Characteristics, Red Flags
- Diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder
- Recognition of individual strengths in an individual with autism
- Treatment strategies for individuals with autism

Behavior
- Applied Behavior Analysis
- Understand factors that influence behavior
- Positive behavior supports and intervention
- Crisis Intervention
- Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Program Development
- Individual Education Plan (IEP)
- Specific Intervention and teaching strategies related to autism
- Assessment tools used to measure progress
- Various treatment strategies related to ASD (including, but not limited to: ABA type strategies, Floortime, RDI, TEACCH, etc.)
- Transition and adult supports

Certified Autism Specialist: Requirements
- Master’s Degree & 2 years of experience in the field or a Bachelors degree & 10 years of experience in the field
- 14 autism-related CE hours: These hours can be earned through IBCCES training as a part of certification. Current applicable credit hours can be uploaded during the application process.
- Pass the competency exam
Autism Certificate: Requirements
- Currently employed in a setting that requires you to work or have contact with individuals with autism.
- 14 autism-related CE hours: These hours can be earned through IBCCES as a part of the certification. Current applicable credit hours can be uploaded in the application process.
- Pass the online competency exam
