John Hite, Psy.D., M.Ed., NCSP
SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST SPECIALIST
John Hite, Psy.D., M.Ed., is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of preschool and school-age children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and other health conditions. Dr. Hite has training in school and clinical psychology across educational and medical settings and has been a school psychologist for ten years. Before becoming a school psychologist, Dr. Hite was a specialist in the inclusion of students with severe disabilities and a special education teacher. He also has extensive experience in working with state governments and organizations on the credentialing and practice of school psychology and advocacy for children. Dr. Hite is the previous Chair of the Credentialing Committee for the National Association of School Psychologists.
Sheila Desai, Ph.D., NCSP
DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE AT THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS
Sheila Desai, Ph.D. is the Director of Educational Practice at the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Dr. Desai has been in the field of school psychology for 12 years with previous experience in practice, teaching, and research. Seven of those years, she worked in Massachusetts and Connecticut as a school psychologist serving K-12 students in Boston Public Schools and EASTCON clinical day treatment settings. Her current role at NASP focuses on social justice, advocacy for students with disabilities, and technical support for school psychologists. She also represents NASP on the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities.
Amy Cannava, Ed.S., NCSP
RESIDENT IN SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY
CHAIR, NASP LGBTQI2-S COMMITTEE
Amy Cannava (she/her), Ed.S., NCSP, is a veteran school psychologist who has come to specialize in working with LGBTQ+ youth. Professionally, Ms. Cannava is Chair of NASP’s LGBTQI2-S Committee, a position selected by the Committee Chair and approved by the President. She trains school districts and universities on creating inclusive environments and
counseling LGBTQ+ youth. She consults with group homes, juvenile justice, and social services in maintaining safe and affirming environments for LGBTQ; has worked with medical and mental health providers to create affirming practices; and volunteers in her community sponsoring a cross-regional Pride Prom which garnered national attention in its first year. Ms. Cannava routinely fields questions from school psychologists nationwide in working with this diverse group. She has provided expert testimony to both the Virginia House and Senate leading up to the ban on conversion therapy for minors, has worked with the VA Department of Education on the implementation of HB 145/SB 161, and provided crisis counseling for The Trevor Project for two years. Within the schools, she has provided individual and group counseling to LGBTQ+ students for ten years and sponsored Gender- Sexuality Alliances. She has co-authored guidance documents with NASP, the Trevor Project, Gender Spectrum, HRC, HBO, and PBS. Personally, Amy has also served as Vice President of PFLAG Winchester, where she facilitated one of PFLAG National’s only sanctioned LGBTQ+ youth groups, mentors LGBTQ+ adolescents, and works with parents to better understand and support their children. She remains inspired, motivated, and challenged by the LGBTQ+ youth she serves.

The Student Mental Health Certificate (SMHC) was created to help non-clinical staff such as educators and support staff better understand and identify students who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, and other concerns. The goal is to identify these students and help them access assistance to reduce tragic outcomes and better understand behavioral issues in the classroom. This program is 14 CEs of online training in the following areas:
Depression, Anxiety, Suicide Prevention, Behavior Management, ADHD, IEP & Program Development, ODD, OCD & Traumatic Brain Injury
AUTISM
The Certified Autism Specialist™(CAS) and Autism Certificate (AC) training and certification programs are designed to help educators in general education and special education settings better understand and work with autistic students. The 14 CEs of online training cover the following topics:
Autism Overview, Behavior, IEP/ARD & Program Development, Early Childhood Identification, Parent Communication & Co-Occuring Disorders
AUTISM TRAINING FOR SUPPORT & ANCILLARY STAFF
Educators in the classroom aren’t the only staff who interact with students daily – bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodial, and other support and ancillary staff are critical to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students. This 4 CE training program will provide a deeper understanding of autistic students’ needs, communication methods, safety, and other best practices.

The Board Certified Cognitive Specialist (BCCS) and Certified Cognitive Coach (CCC) training and certification programs were designed to address the need for best practices on a variety of increasingly prevalent disorders seen by educators in the classroom.
