Student Mental Health Certificate (SMHC), Teacher

What’s your favorite part about what you do?

“I love serving my students. I believe that teaching is a form of leadership through service. The students want to learn, they want to explore, they need to be creative, and as a teacher my job is to facilitate that for them.”

How has your IBCCES training/credential helped you in your career?

“The IBCCES training for student mental health helped me better understand the neuroscience involved in mental health issues interwoven into the fabric of public education. A public school reflects the community, thus the public mental health crisis affects our campus. The training provided me with the tools to better prepare to help my students thrive not only academically but also personally.”

How do you use/implement what you learned in the IBCCES certification training?

“I have slowly incorporated mental health breaks into my course over the last three years, which was a good start. With the certification I received from IBCCES, I feel that I can expand on these breaks so they are more beneficial to my students and more focused in their nature. A ‘break’ is not necessarily what the students need all the time because this does not teach them the coping mechanisms that would better prepare them for their careers as adults.”
