Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center Becomes First Certified Autism Center

Jacksonville, FL (Sept. 16, 2015) – The Jacksonville Speech and Hearing Center(JSHC) has earned its certification of autism care from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).  This designation means that at least 80% of the JSHC staff has undergone a rigorous training process that will assist in providing speech pathology and audiology services for those who have autism.  It is believed that the nonprofit is the first healthcare provider in North Florida to undergo this training for its staff.

VICTORIA, TEXAS – Get an inside look at autism from acclaimed author and speaker Dr. Stephen Shore as he shares his personal experiences and best practices in working with individuals with autism during a free special lecture on August 17. Diagnosed with “Atypical Development and strong autistic tendencies” and “too sick” for outpatient treatment Dr. Shore was recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four and with much support from his parents, teachers, wife and others, Stephen is now a professor at Adelphi University where his research focuses on matching best practice to the needs of people with autism.

This one-hour lecture will be held Monday, August 17 from 7-8 p.m. at the Johnson Symposium Center at Victoria College, located at 2200 E. Red River in Victoria, Texas.

Autism: Back to Basics

A high school student recently called to interview me for a research project on Autism. Our conversation led me to reflect on how beneficial it can be to take a step back and look at the basics of what we know about autism. Those of us in the field of special education for some time can, at times, forget that there are individuals who may not be familiar with autism. Autism can become such an integral part of our lives that it can be helpful to take a step back and look at the basics of what we know with a fresh perspective.
