Why did you choose your profession?

I chose travel or rather travel chose me because I love exploring new places. I love everything about it from the getting there to all of the fun you have once you’re there. The foods, the sights, the sounds and the people in each place are so unique and wonderful!

Additionally, because I have a daughter with special needs I wanted to be able to help other people with a family member with special needs, be able to travel more easily. To alleviate some of the stress and questions and take some of the things I have learned over the years and share that.

What’s your favorite part about what you do?

I love helping families enjoy vacations without having to stress. My favorite thing about my job is when I get a note or a picture of a family enjoying themselves and I know I played a part in that.

How has your IBCCES training/credential helped you in your career?

Being able to have more knowledge about the autism community has helped me immensely. A family traveling with a child or adult with autism is going to face challenges unique to them, on top of the normal stress of travel. I can use what I have learned to help talk to that family and guide them, to know what questions to ask about their needs, and to better research locations, attractions, etc.

How do you use/implement what you learned in the IBCCES certification training?

I can have a frank discussion with a family about their family member with autism without making assumptions. I am now more sensitive and aware of how autism may affect each person differently. I used what I learned to create a checklist of questions to ask the family in my initial call as well as a checklist for researching resorts, destinations, and attractions for them to visit.
