Heather Wells, CCC-SLP
BCCS & Executive Director, Brain Balance of Katy, Mansfield, and Southlake
Why did you choose your profession? |
I chose to be a therapist because I want to support all individuals in having a voice and thriving in their highest quality of life possible. I was born legally blind, with tumors on both optic nerves. Once the doctors restored my sight to the extent possible, I continued living in a state of confusion and exhaustion as I strained to process unfamiliar input. I have also been the mom of boys with neurodevelopmental challenges and the caregiver for my parents, both of whom struggle with cognitive issues. My career is my calling because personal trials have equipped me to serve others on a level I would not have otherwise been able to accomplish. |
What’s your favorite part about what you do? |
I am passionate about helping families understand this: It is not merely about, “Can my child do this task, yes or no?” The more poignant question is, “How hard do they churn to do routine tasks the rest of us may easily take for granted?” Quality of life matters, and it is essential to recognize almost invisible struggles and address the root causes of challenges instead of putting a Band-Aid on symptoms. When parents and caregivers embrace this, it is phenomenal to see the transformations in students and the family unit. |
How has your IBCCES training/credential helped you in your career? |
All my team members completed this training, and the process helped them create deeper mental schemas regarding the struggles our students face and to take our program outcomes to the next level. Moreover, having certified centers has afforded further credibility to the services we offer parents and their children. |
How do you use/implement what you learned in the IBCCES certification training? |
I conduct seminars for physicians, educational institutions, nonprofits, and corporations, and it was useful to hear how these experts convey many of the same concepts I educate audiences on regularly. Akin to the impact of having certified centers, this credential has led to additional buy-in regarding the training sessions I provide. |
